Onesimus Semalulu

Dr. Onesimus Semalulu is a Principal Research Officer  attached to the Soils Program at NARL. He has a PhD (Soil fertility) and MSc (Soil Science) from University of Kentucky, USA and a BSc from Makerere University. He previously served as Head of Soils Program. He has coordinated a number of national and regional (E. Africa) multi-disciplinary collaborative research projects on integrated natural resource management (INRM) with emphasis on soil, water, nutrient and environmental management. He has served as Principal Investigator or Collaborator on various projects funded by USAID, ASARECA, GEF, DFID, GOU, AGRA, RDA/KOPIA. He has published widely. Dr.Semalulu was the best Oral Presenter at the 2nd Bie annual NARO scientific Conference 2014.

Background:

Formerly a rubber estate, the institute was acquired in 1934 from K. Borup, a Danish farmer. It became the headquarters of research division of the Department of Agriculture in 1937 with a mandate to conduct research on coffee, tea, cotton and native food crops. The 630 hectare station located13km north of Kampala became the hub for scientific investigations for African agriculture to make it more productive and economically viable.

The institute has undergone several transformations both in naming and core research mandates and activities over the years. Currently, it is one of the six National Agricultural Research Institutes (NARIs established by the NAR Act 2005) under the dispensation of the National Agricultural Research organization.
