NARO set up a national centre for agricultural research in biotechnology at National Agricultural Research Laboratories, Kawanda .The Centre (NABC) was to help NARO meet its overall goal of contributing to sustainable agricultural productivity, competitiveness, economic growth, and food security and poverty eradication. Specifically, the goal of the ABC is to contribute to increased agricultural productivity through development of novel products using biotechnology tools. Deployment of these tools will raise both research efficiency and deliver products previously impossible to generate through conventional means. Uganda Government's desire to apply biotechnology tools to solve agricultural development problems is expressed in the National Science and Technology Policy and fully articulated in the plan for modernization of agriculture (PMA)
